Gillian Canniff has practiced in a variety of areas including personal injury, insurance defence, wrongful dismissal and estate litigation, but her predominate focus has always been family law. Having been through a separation and divorce herself, Gillian is conscious of the fact that separation and divorce affects many individuals not just those involved in the dispute. She focuses on trying to find the best outcome for her client’s and their families. Her strengths are her empathetic nature and desire to assist families in transitioning as smoothly as possible through very difficult times. Gillian’s top priorities with her clients are clear communication and developing a trusting relationship.
Gillian assists clients through the whole separation and/or divorce process. She has represented clients at all levels of Court in British Columbia though her preference is resolving claims through alternative dispute resolution approaches such as mediation.
Gillian also helps clients entering into relationships through drafting co-habitation, prenuptial and marriage agreements.
Gillian completed her Bachelor of Arts in 1992 at the University of Calgary. In 1995 she completed her Paralegal Diploma from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and worked for a number of years in Calgary as a Paralegal. Gillian earned her law degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 2001. Gillian articled at Robertson Downe & Mullally in Abbotsford and worked in the Lower Mainland for 10 years.
Gillian is active in the community through her involvement with Rotary. She is a member of the Youth Exchange District Committee and is responsible for coordinating and facilitating all of the orientations for students who travel abroad through the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. In the past, Gillian has also been an instructor with the Vancouver Community College Paralegal Program and a past Instructor with the Alberta Disabled Ski Association.
